What is ultra-clear glass? What is the difference between it and ordinary glass?

November 11, 2022

Characteristics of ultra-clear glass

Ultra-clear glass, also known as high transparency glass and low iron glass, is an ultra-clear low iron glass. How high is its light transmittance? The light transmission rate of ultra-white glass can reach 91.5% or more, with the characteristics of high-grade and elegant, crystal clear. Therefore, it is called the "crystal prince" of the glass family, and ultra-clear glass has superior mechanical, physical and optical properties, which is unparalleled by other glasses, while super white glass has all the processable properties of high-quality float glass, so it can be processed like other float glass. This superior product performance and quality makes ultra-clear glass has a broad application space and advanced market prospects.

Applications of ultra-clear glass

Ultra-clear glass is mainly used in high-grade buildings, high-grade glass processing and solar photovoltaic curtain wall field and high-grade glass furniture, decorative glass, imitation crystal products, lighting glass, precision electronics industry (copiers, scanners), special buildings, etc..

In China, the application of ultra-white glass is rapidly expanding, the application of high-grade buildings and special buildings have opened up, such as the National Grand Theatre in Beijing, Beijing Botanical Garden, Shanghai Opera House, Shanghai Pudong Airport, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, Nanjing China Art Center and hundreds of other projects have applied ultra-clear glass. High-grade furniture and high-grade decorative lamps and lanterns also began to apply a large number of ultra-white glass, held in Beijing furniture and processing machinery exhibition on many glass furniture with ultra-white glass.

Ultra-clear glass as a substrate material, with its unique high light transmission, the development of solar energy technology to provide a broader space for development. Ultra-white glass as solar thermal, photoelectric conversion system substrate, is an international breakthrough in solar energy utilization technology, greatly improving the photoelectric conversion efficiency. In particular, China began to build a new solar photovoltaic curtain wall production line, will use a large number of ultra-clear glass.

The difference between ultra-clear glass and ordinary white glass

Different iron content

The main difference between the transparency of ordinary white glass and ultra-clear glass is the amount of iron oxide (Fe2O3), the content of ordinary white is more, and the content of ultra-clear is less.

Different light transmittance

Because the iron content is different, so the light transmission rate is different. The light transmission of ordinary white glass is about 86% or less; ultra-white glass is a kind of ultra-transparent low-iron glass, also known as low-iron glass, high transparent glass. Light transmission rate of up to 91.5% or more.

Different self-explosion rate of glass

As the raw materials of ultra-white glass generally contain less impurities such as NiS, the fine control in the melting process of raw materials, making ultra-white glass has a more homogeneous composition relative to ordinary glass, its internal impurities less, thus greatly reducing the chances of possible self-explosion after toughening.

Different color consistency

As the iron content of raw materials is only 1/10 of ordinary glass or even lower, ultra-white glass relative to ordinary glass in the green band of visible light absorption less, to ensure the consistency of the glass color.

Different technology content

Ultra-clear glass has a relatively high technological content and difficult production control, which has a stronger profitability compared to ordinary glass. The higher quality determines its high price, and the price of super-white glass is 1~2 times of ordinary glass, the cost is not much higher than ordinary glass, but the technical barriers are relatively high, with high added value.
