The difference between laminated glass and insulating glass

September 02, 2022

What is insulating glass?

It is a new building material with good heat insulation, sound insulation, beautiful and applicable, and can reduce the self-weight of the building. It is made of two (or three) pieces of glass, with a desiccant that absorbs water vapor between the glass, thus ensuring that the inside of the insulating glass is a dry air layer for a long time without the presence of water vapor and dust. The glass is bonded to the aluminum alloy frame using a high-strength, high-airtight composite binder to make a high-efficiency acoustic and thermal insulation glass.

What is laminated glass?

Laminated glass is also called laminated glass. Two or more pieces of float glass are laminated with a strong PVB (ethylene polymer butyrate) film, and then put into an autoclave to dissolve a small amount of residual air into the film by using high temperature and pressure. Compared with other glass, it has the performance of shock resistance, anti-theft, bullet-proof and explosion-proof.

So, laminated glass and insulating glass, in the end, which one should be chosen?

First of all, both laminated glass and insulating glass have sound and heat insulation effects to a certain extent. However, laminated glass has excellent shock resistance and explosion-proof performance, while insulating glass has better heat insulation and thermal insulation.

In terms of sound insulation, there are different differences between the two. Laminated glass, because of its good seismic performance, is less likely to bring noise from its own vibration when the wind is strong, especially for low and medium frequencies. Insulating glass, on the other hand, is prone to resonance.

But to say to isolate the external noise, or insulating glass is slightly more advantageous. So, according to different places, the choice of glass is also different.

Insulating glass is still the mainstream!

Insulating glass is made of two (or three) pieces of glass, and the use of high-strength, high airtight composite binder to bond the glass and aluminum alloy frame containing desiccant, made of high-performance sound insulation and thermal insulation glass.

1、Heat insulation and thermal insulation

The thermal conductivity of the sealed air layer in the glass hollow is much lower than the conventional one, so compared with the single piece of glass, the thermal insulation performance of the hollow glass can be increased twice: in summer, the hollow glass can block 70% of the sun's radiation energy to avoid rapid indoor heating and reduce the energy consumption of air conditioning; in winter, the hollow glass can well block the indoor heating loss and reduce the heat loss rate by 40%.

2、Safety protection

Glass products are tempered at 695 degrees to ensure that the glass surface is heated evenly; the temperature difference it can withstand is three times that of ordinary glass, and the impact strength is five times that of ordinary glass. Hollow tempered glass can become bean-like (obtuse angle) particles when it is damaged, so it is not easy to hurt people, and the safety experience of doors and windows is more secure.

3、Sound insulation and noise reduction

The hollow layer is filled with inert gas - argon. After filling with argon gas, the sound insulation and noise reduction effect of doors and windows can reach 60%. At the same time, because of the low thermal conductivity of dry inert gas, the insulation performance of the hollow argon filling layer is also much higher than that of ordinary doors and windows.

If the ordinary household, insulating glass is the most widely used choice, if you live in the upper floors, windy, relatively small outside noise, laminated glass is also a good choice.

The most direct manifestation of the two types of glass is the use in the sunroom. Generally the top of the sunroom is using laminated double tempered glass. And the façade glass of the sunroom uses insulating glass.

Because if you encounter falling objects, the safety of laminated glass is relatively high, not easy to completely shatter. And the façade glass use insulating glass, in order to better achieve heat insulation and heat preservation, so that the sunroom is warm in winter and cool in summer. Therefore, we cannot say which is better, double-laminated glass or double insulating glass, but only that in which aspect the need is greater. Window glass is the knight who protects the home, and the most suitable for your own home is the best.
