Copper-free Silver Mirror Production Process

March 17, 2023

1. Flushing glass

The polished flat glass is rinsed with heated distilled water. Since the minerals in tap water can affect the mirroring effect during the silver plating process, the entire cleaning process cannot be done directly with tap water.

2. Silver plating preparation

Since silver itself has no way to adhere directly to the glass surface, the factory makes the mirror by first spraying a tiny amount of stannous chloride solution onto the flat glass to create a stannous ion sensitized layer on the surface.

3. Silver plating process

The silver used here is actually a silver nitrate solution, which is mixed with the reducing solution and sprayed on the plate glass with the stannous chloride solution. After a few seconds, the reduced silver is precipitated on the surface of the glass plate and gradually deposited and hardened to form a reflective layer with a silver film.

4. Seal silver plating layer

The mirror is passed through the curtain coating machine, evenly coated with the first coat of protective paint and then immediately sent to a 99°C oven for drying. The second coat was also applied with a curtain coating machine, but with a different coating. The second coat was also applied with a curtain coating machine, but with a different coating, and was then dried in an oven at 118°C. The coating also cured and adhered to the mirror after 210 seconds.

5. Check the mirror

After the protective coating is applied, the mirror goes through another acid wash to remove the excess metal residue. Then the workers will stand the mirror up to carefully check the mirror for defects, if there are bubbles will be marked first, and then have to be removed when made into small pieces of glass.

6. Custom Cutting

The factory will also do custom cutting according to the size and shape of the customer's custom order.
